I headed down to the beach by my house in Pacific Palisades with my dog to watch the sunset but missed the sun as it slid behind these clouds and was left with only the twilights last glimmer
A late backpacking trip after Labor Day into Big McGee Lake in the eastern Sierra’s brought and unanticipated surprise and an abrupt end to summer. The crisp clear air, brilliant sunshine and Aspens with their fall colors made for a beautiful hike into the lake and I had the whole place to my self.
The Palisades Glacier is the largest glacier in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Located about 20 miles north of the city of Big Pine, CA. The east lobe now terminates in a Lake. Data indicate that the glacier has experienced a large scale retreat in recent years. The glacier has lost nearly half of its surface ice and now measures less than a square kilometer in area. The cause is increased temperates due to increase CO2 levels caused people.
On a trip to the San Francisco Bay area I had a chance to hike around Mt Tamalpais just as the ever present fog came rolling in. To quote Mark Twain “ The coldest winter I ever had was the summer I spent in San Francisco.”
Hidden in plain sight from Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains offer easy access to surprisingly wild places. Including famous beaches of Malibu and more than 500 miles of trails and comprises over 150,000 acres.
Stretching from Will Rogers State Historic Park in the south to Point Mugu 60 miles away to north and from the ocean to inland valley the area is a treasure to hike and paint.
